Artificial Intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept. In India today, AI systems are actively used to approve loans, detect fraud, shortlist job candidates, personalise prices, and even decide which customers deserve faster service. While these systems promise speed and efficiency, they also introduce a new category of risk- one that is harder to see, explain, and control.
From an internal audit perspective, this creates a fundamental challenge. Traditional audits are designed to review processes and decisions that humans can explain. AI, on the other hand, often operates as a "black box," producing outcomes without clear visibility into how those outcomes were reached.
One of the most significant risks in this context is algorithmic bias. Simply put, AI systems learn from historical data. If that data reflects past biases, the algorithm can replicate and amplify them. For example, a credit model trained on skewed historical lending data may consistently disadvantage certain customer segments, even if there is no explicit intention to do so.
Auditing such risks requires a shift in approach. The focus can no longer remain limited to whether policies exist or controls are documented. Instead, the internal audit must ask deeper questions:
• Is the data used to train the model complete, accurate, and representative?
• Are certain groups consistently receiving unfavourable outcomes?
• Is there governance oversight over how AI models are designed, updated, and used?
Another critical aspect is ethical decision-making. AI systems increasingly take automated decisions that have real-world consequences—loan rejections, transaction blocks, or customer classifications. When decisions are automated, accountability can become blurred. If something goes wrong, who is to be held responsible?
This is where AI governance becomes essential. Effective governance frameworks define clear ownership, approval mechanisms, periodic reviews, and escalation protocols for AI-driven decisions. From an audit standpoint, the presence of such frameworks is often more important than the sophistication of the technology itself.
Internal audit also plays a vital role in ensuring regulatory and compliance alignment. Regulators are increasingly concerned about fairness, transparency, and explainability in automated systems, particularly in BFSI and consumer-facing sectors. Audits must therefore assess not just outcomes, but whether organisations can explain how decisions are made and demonstrate that adequate checks exist.
Importantly, auditing AI does not mean auditing line by line. The objective is not to become data scientists, but to ensure that risk awareness, controls, and governance maturity keep pace with automation. This includes validating model review processes, monitoring exception trends, and ensuring that human oversight remains meaningful.
As AI becomes embedded in core business decisions, the internal audit’s role evolves from reviewing transactions to safeguarding trust. Auditing algorithmic bias and ethics is not about resisting technology; it is about ensuring that innovation remains responsible, fair, and aligned with organisational values. The future of audit lies not in understanding every algorithm, but in asking the right questions of those who design and deploy them.
